Marmer Medical Center : SEEING CLEARLY IN FLIGHT

June 30, 2010 by ftsys1

You are on your final approach. The runway is clearly in sight. At this moment you glance down at your instrument panel and find that it?s just a wee bit fuzzy. You lean forward to get a closer look and find that this makes it even more difficult to see. You have been noticing changes like this since your 40th birthday, but have been overlooking them because you?ve only been considering these changes to be related to ?eye strain.? When looking at maps prior to planning your next flight, you have noticed that you have had to hold the map out somewhat further from you than in the past. In fact, on some occasions you have found yourself ?cheating? a bit with a hand magnifier for some of the finer details.

You begin discussing this topic with a number of your contemporaries and hear a myriad of ?solutions.? Reading glasses appear to be the most popular solution, but although they certainly provide easy viewing of reading material, it makes the instrument panel in the cockpit almost impossible to see. You have heard that some individuals resort to ?monovision? where one contact lens, if necessary, is used for distance, and the contact in the other eye is used for close work. While this once again helps with reading, it still does not help with the instrument panel, but most importantly contributes to a slight decrease in depth perception. This has not been recommended for pilots coming in for a landing.

Bifocal lenses would help both distance and near, but a blended bifocal or trifocal would be necessary to see distance, instrument panel and reading (far, intermediate, and near.) But what if you have found that you just can?t wear glasses or contact lenses, or at least prefer not to if at all possible? Many have been experiencing nearly perfect vision all their lives, but now after the age of 40, are recognizing that near projects are beginning to become more and more difficult without any optical aid whatsoever.

There is now a solution that can actually restore the natural ability to focus once again. The act of changing focus from distance to near is called accommodation. The prescription in the eye does not change, but the ability to allow the lens in the eye to see things clearly up close requires the use of the ?accommodating muscles? of the eye. A new surgical procedure can actually turn back this clock 25 years and allow you to do your close work like you used to be able to do, when you were much younger.

Because the natural lens continues to grow throughout life, it eventually (at around 40 years of age) comprises the ability of the ?muscles of accommodation? to function. By placing four tiny implants just beneath the surface of the white of the eye overlying these muscles, natural ?accommodation? is restored. This outpatient procedure is done under topical anesthetic where you do not have to be put to sleep or stay overnight in the hospital. It restores your natural ability to see at near. There are no patches needed for the eyes once the procedure is completed. Immediately after completing the surgery, you may be able to pick up a newspaper and read.

Not everyone is nearsighted (myopia), not everyone is farsighted (Hyperopia,) and not everyone has astigmatism?but everyone who lives beyond the age of 40 experiences presbyopia, the inability to see at near without additional optical assistance. Recent technology in refractive surgery in ophthalmology has allowed us to reduce or eliminate nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. The last frontier is to ?cure? presbyopia. All methods of treating presbyopia?to date?are merely ?compensation.? If you wear reading glasses, bifocals or bifocal lenses, you still have the same problems at near when these are removed. If you wear ?monovision? contacts or undergo ?monovision? refractive surgery, only one eye is clear at near, and depth perception is decreased. Until this new procedure was developed, there was no ability to allow both eyes to see clearly both at a distance and at near without any additional assistance. This procedure takes you back to your days of high school when you could look at the blackboard and then look at your notes without any additional assistance.
The estimated duration of the effectiveness of this procedure is projected to be between 25 and 30 years. At that time, if necessary, it may be possible to repeat the procedure to provide additional effect.

So, if you?re coming in on your final approach and are starting to notice difficulties and have the runway clearly in sight, but are having trouble in seeing the instrument panel or you watch, then you may wish to consider pursuing information regarding a new technique called The Surgical Reversal of Presbyopia.

In another words, there is no escape from computers nowadays.

Result- vision related problems and eye diseases. Here are some useful eye care tips for computer personnel, which if followed religiously will give long-term results:

Work for 20 to 30 minutes on computer at a stretch. Then look at a distant object and blink slowly several times. Do not stare at your computer. This can lead to Sjogren?s syndrome or dry eyes. Make a conscious effort to blink frequently, at least 12 to 15 times every minute. Once you start doing this, it will soon become a habit.

Exercise your eye balls at frequent intervals. Close your eyes and role them underneath the eyelids in clockwise and anti clockwise direction. While you do this this, breathe in deeply and breathe out. Finally, open your eyes very slowly.

Take a small piece of soft linen, say, your clean handkerchief, fold it in a square and puff on it till it is warm. Now, cover your eyes with the handkerchief for about a minute. It helps in relaxing and soothing your eyes. You can also do this with your palms, if you find your handkerchief not clean enough. Take small breaks at frequent intervals, and splash water on your face. This helps to cool your eyes. Take a brisk walk down the floor every time you take a break. Walking not only relaxes your whole body but also increases blood supply to your eyes.

Get an anti-glare screen fixed on to your computer monitor, or use your own pair of anti-glare glasses while working on computers. Also adjust the brightness of the monitor in such a way that the harmful glare from the computer screen is minimum.

Focus on The Eye

The following article is taken from John Hopkins Health Alert:

If you are age 50 or older, you may be concerned about eventually developing one of the four common eye diseases that affect older people cataracts, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, and for those with diabetes diabetic retinopathy. Yet most of us rarely consider the complex process that enables us to see the world around us until our vision is threatened. In this Health Alert, Johns Hopkins explains how the eye works.

The eye is a complex structure that sends nerve impulses to the brain when stimulated by light rays reflected from an object. The brain then processes these impulses to create the perception of vision. The eye is made up of numerous parts that work together to make vision possible. Here’s how the eye works:

Eyeball:

When light enters the eye, it first passes through the cornea, a curved, transparent disk that covers the iris and pupil. The iris is the colored part of the eye, composed of connective tissue and muscle. The pupil is the small black opening in the middle of the eye through which light passes.

When exposed to bright light, muscles in the iris contract to make the pupil smaller and to allow less light to enter the eye. In dim light, these muscles expand, pupil size increases, and more light enters the eye. The sclera — the white of the eye — is a protective layer that connects with the cornea and encases the rest of the eye.

Light passes through the pupil and the lens, a transparent, elastic structure that stretches and contracts to help focus light on the retina. (The cornea does about 75% of the work of focusing light on the retina; the lens does the rest.) The light then passes though the vitreous humor, a transparent, gel-like substance that fills the portion of the eye between the lens and retina.

Finally, light reaches the retina, a layer of nerves lining the rear of the eye. The retina senses the characteristics of the light and converts such elements as color, shape, and brightness into electrical impulses that are sent to the brain through a collection of nerve fibers called the optic nerve.

The macula, the important central part of the retina, is located close to the site where the optic nerve connects with the eye. The macula is densely packed with cells called cones, which are critical for seeing color and bright images. (Other cells, called rods, are dispersed in different areas of the retina and respond more strongly to dim light.) The macula is also responsible for detailed visual acuity (needed for activities like reading) as well as for viewing images in the center of the visual field, rather than the periphery.

Understanding Dry Eye And Its Treatments

Dry eye is a condition that can happen frequently and it could cause itching and irritation. Persistent dry eye is not uncommon and it could eventually cause vision impairment. If you suffer from this problem then it is strongly recommended that you see an ophthalmologist so they can assess the condition before it affects how well you see. If you wish to wear contact lenses, you would need to look for contact lenses for dry eyes. If you understand the reason why dry eye happens then you may be able to alleviate yourself of this problem. This article is going to provide you with helpful tips on dry eye causes and remedies.

In the corner of each eye near the nose is a small gland known as the tear duct. This duct is exactly what is responsible for producing tears and also helps keep your eye moist, whenever this duct isn’t generating a sufficient amount of fluid then your eye starts to become dry. The liquid that is produced by the ducts is supposed to clear away dust and pollen from the surface area of the eye.

There are numerous reasons why dry eye might take place. Probably the most typical reasons for this condition is age. Nevertheless that doesn’t mean it only happens in the middle aged or older folk. Even though there are numerous factors which may be adding to the problem which include diet and other lifestyle factors, the condition is still identical.

Looking at the computer for a long period also can bring about dry eyes. Tears are produced whenever we blink. Nevertheless, when we look at the computer monitor, most of us usually blink less and as a result, less tears are produced which creates the dry eye issue.

The environment may also be a problem. There could be some particles in the air where you reside or something that you work with that results in the eyes to dry out. This may also be caused by prescription drugs or diet. Health conditions can cause this as well such as menopause or a affliction named Sjorgren’s syndrome.

If you find no appropriate lubrication of the eye then there is often discomfort including itchiness and irritation. When this problem persists it might lead to additional problems for the eyes. To be able to correct this problem the eyes must have more moisture. There are several methods to accomplish this.

The eye doctor would want to figure out why you have the situation so they really know what treatment is the most suitable for your particular situation. Especially if it’s being induced by a medical problem or medication then you will only be able to pinpoint that with the help of an experienced ophthalmologist.

Should your situation is moderate, there are numerous products available with artificial tears that might help. Although these types of solutions may lubricate the eye and provide temporary alleviation they’ll not cure the problem if something else is going on. There are also several ointments that may be of some assistance. An eye doctor who understands contact lenses and dry eye will generally recommend a more powerful solution than what you can purchase over the counter should your problem is severe. Several of the drugs contain steroids and still provide good results even with the worst long-term conditions. Additionally, there are surgical treatments that may be done however they are generally only done on patients with the worst situation of dry eyes.

Two Effective Eye Exercises To Improve Your Eyesight

January 29, 2010 by ftsys1

You can improve your vision with eye exercises that targets your eyes ability to relax and accommodates. Perfect sight is attainable even if you have been taught to wear glasses in the past.

It was the ophthalmologist William Bates and with his book The Cure of Imperfect Sight by Treatment Without Glasses that got me to open my eyes myself. I’m now sharing his methods with you and lets get started.

To improve vision overall there is a great method that Bates developed. It’s called the palming method. Because the secret to improve your vision is almost always about getting your eyes to relax.

Poor vision in most cases are the result of mental and physical strain and palming helps to relieve this. Palming as a technique is very simple and I use this technique myself at times when I’ve been staring at the computer screen too long and I feel my eyes need a rest. It’s very relaxing and I advice you to try it.

To do it you need to first rub your hands together. This will create heat and then place your palms over the eyes. You can have open eyes when you do this but when you start I recommend you to close your eyes. Then simply focus on your breath and breathe long and deep. After a few minutes you will notice that this exercise is really relaxing and you can almost fall asleep. This is why you should set a timer before you begin. A good time to start with is 10 – 15 minutes.

If you want to improve your eyesight then you should really commit to doing at least 10 minutes of palming each day.

To make this eye exercise even more effective you should try to visualize the color black. This little extra thing is to get your mind to relax even more and it multiplies the effect of the palming. William Bates said that if you do this then you are putting your mind in a state of perfect relaxation. I have a bit of a trouble with this and if you have it as well then it’s a matter of practice until you perfect it.

To improve your ability to accommodate there is a special exercise you can do for this.

To do it you need to have a small piece of paper with some form of symbol on it. You should be able to focus on the symbol without effort when holding it in front of you.
Sit in a chair and look out through a window with the paper hold out in front of you. Then pick an object outside your window that you can focus on. Hold your focus on it for a few seconds then take the paper in your hand and hold it out so that it’s right underneath the object you have chosen outside.

Then simply switch focus to your paper and focus in on it a few seconds. Then switch back to your distant object and hold it with your focus. Continue this cycle for some time until you can do it easily. Then experiment with this exercise and move the paper in your hand closer and further away from your eyes.

This will exercise the accommodating muscles in the eye and improve your accommodation greatly. Do this for 5 to 10 minutes daily and then close with some palming for best result.

Doing this exercise a lot and you might experience something called telescopic vision. The ability to see objects really really far away.
This is an article in which you?ll learn two great exercises you can use to improve your eyesight naturally.

Cure Lazy Eye – How To Cure A Lazy Eye

January 11, 2010 by ftsys1

What is the cure for lazy eye?

Well, in this improve vision article you are going to read about a lazy eye cure that doesn’t involve surgery. Instead this cure involves relieving what’s causing the lazy eye.

If you have thought about undergoing surgery to cure your problem then you probably want to continue to read this article. You can fix lazy eye without surgery and here’s how to do it.

Lazy eye is the result of a strain. This strain has been developed when you try to see instead of seeing. Imagine yourself trying to read in darkness and you will know what type of strain I’m talking about.

The strain can also be caused by emotional things such as stress and depression.

The strain causes the muscles which is responsible for accommodation and turning the eye in the eye socket to become inharmonious. One muscle is pulling more than another and this results in that the eye is pulled in one direction.

Now, the brain needs to fuse two images together and these two images needs to be parallel. The disharmony of the eye muscles will prevent the two images to be parallel. When your brain is fusing the images together the result is that what you see becomes blurry.

Your brain will see the eye which is not in harmony to be damaged and “turn off” or reduce the vision on this eye to not cause so much trouble.

This is the why but how about the cure?

In order to get cured from lazy eye or amblyopia as it’s also called you have to relieve the strain that’s causing the eye muscles to pull unequal.

This is done by eye exercises which forces the eye to relax. The special eye exercises will relieve the strain and the muscles will begin to work in harmony again. The eye will return to its center place in the eye socket which will give your brain two parallel pictures to fuse together. There will be no blurry vision but a clear picture of what you are looking at.

The question is… What type of eye exercises will help you?

As the ophthalmologist William Bates found, in order to cure lazy eye you need to make the squint worse. If you have one eye that’s pointing inward then you need to actively increase this inward looking by focusing at the tip of your nose.

If you have an eye pointing outward then you need to increase it by actively looking outward. This is a bit more difficult but it can be done with a little bit of practice.

The key is to increase the squint actively as this exercises the muscles of the eye and relieves the strain.

There are more techniques you can use to relieve the strain. One of these are the visualization of black velvet when you close your eyes. This will help to relieve any strain that you have in your eyes.

Another is the palming technique were you place your palms over your eyes and just relax. The strain is resolved once the eyes learn how to relax.

How To Fix Your Lazy Eye

December 26, 2009 by ftsys1

In this article you will learn how to fix your lazy eye with the help of vision techniques developed by William Bates. It?s a technique that was forgotten but it has surfaced once more and you can use it to cure your condition without going through surgery.

We as humans have two eyes. These eyes will produce two pictures of the scene you are looking at. It’s the mind’s task to then fuse these two pictures into one, and in order to do this the two eyes have to be in harmony with each other. The two eyes have to be parallel with each other in order for the mind to fuse the two pictures into a clear image you can recognize.

Lazy eye is when this harmony has been disturbed and your two eyes are not parallel with each other. The physical effect is called strabismus or squint and it produces the visual effect called amblyopia or lazy eye.

Now, this condition causes blurred vision, but it can also cause headache and be unpleasant for the appearance of the suffering person. You face and the eyes are your window to the surrounding world. Lack of symmetry in the face can feel shameful for some sufferers.

Now, how do you fix a lazy eye?

Back in the days they used to recommend surgery to the muscles that operated the eyes movements, but today it’s only advised as a last resort. This is because most surgery done to fix it is only cosmetic and in some cases will probably worsen the condition.

Soon they found that this method was not helping at all and there were lots of theories about what was causing this condition to appear. None proved to be successful.
One doctor named Dr. William Bates would be the one that stumbled upon the cure and the cause for lazy eye.

He found that in all cases of lazy eye there were some form of strain. And fixing this strain would lead to the curing of both the physical condition strabismus, and the visual condition amblyopia.

This strain could easily be fixed by getting the eye to relax. Dr. Bates found techniques he could apply to the condition and that would cure it perfectly.

You will find these techniques in the Vision Without Glasses Manual. It’s a manual written for our time because Dr. Bates died in 1931 and the language he used to describe his theories was very different than today. It was a bit hard for people today to understand.

But It has been rewritten and made available once again and few people knows about this.

In that manual there is a section on lazy eye and how to fix it. Basically it involves making the squint worse, and remembering a perfectly black period so that the lazy eye can relax. It can then be cured and the vision of that eye will return to normal.
